Master in Economics and Finance

"Economics and Finance" is a program of international level, modern and dynamic. The knowledge gained by the graduate will help him to understand and solve the microeconomic and financial problems that we face every day in the business world, as well as macroeconomic problems in the national economy as a whole. The program also presents professional and practical knowledge necessary for the implementation of entrepreneurial ideas, as well as the effective organization and management of a company or government agency. The program is intended for those who plan and implement strategic and operational scenarios for the development of companies, conduct economic analysis for the needs of the company's strategic development and know how to recognize the opportunities and threats of the economic, business and institutional environment and react accordingly.

Admission Criteria

First year enrollment is open to

1.    Graduates of the first cycle study program who completed studies in Management, Economics, Business and Administration Sciences or Law; or

2.    Graduates of the study program for a previous graduate qualification (pre-Bologna programs) studying Management, Economics, Business and Administration Sciences or Law.

Graduates from study areas not included in the previous paragraphs must complete additional academic requirements (equivalent to 18 ECTS): Basic Economics, Principles of Accounting, Basic Corporate Finance.

All applicants who enroll in the study program in English language are required to demonstrate English language skills at B2 level according to the Common European Reference Framework for Languages (CEFR) with a corresponding certificate.

The relevant proof of compliance with this requirement can be:

Certificate of completion of English language examination at B2 level or equivalent certificate (eg. TOEFL iBT score of 87-109, IELTS score of 5-6.5, Cambridge FCE, Oxford B2 Upper intermediate and similar),

a matura certificate from which it is shown that the foreign language subject at the matura was English language,

a certificate of completion of secondary education in the English language,

a diploma at a higher education institution in a study program conducted in English language and a confirmation (statement) that the candidate has completed the program in English language.

 

Candidates who have passed a general matura in the Republic of Slovenia and have passed English at the matura do not send proof of English language skills; the required information is sent by the State Examination Centre to the higher education institution's admission office.

In accordance with Article 41 of the Higher Education Act, candidates are ranked in cases where the number of available places are limited. Candidates are ranked based on their undergraduate GPA.

A ranking list will be published and candidates will be notified.

Additional admission requirement

All candidates must successfully complete a test demonstrating analytical skills from the fields of economics and mathematics.  Candidates will receive a written invitation to the test and will be notified in writing of the results and admission to the programme.

Prerequisite exams prior to enrolment

Graduates from study areas other than Management, Economics, Business and Administration Sciences or Law, must complete additional academic requirements stated in the section Admission criteria, prior to enrolment to the study programme. The cost of each exam is 39,55 EUR according to the valid pricelist and has to be paid upon receipt of the invoice before the exam.

Candidates must apply for the prerequisites exams (click to download application form). Candidates who will not pass the prerequisites exams by the application deadline will not meet the admission criteria and will not be admitted to the study program.

Candidates who have already completed courses with content included in the prerequisite program during previous studies, can apply for a recognition of knowledge. The application has to be sent to the Student Affairs Office by 18 August 2018. Supporting documents such as course syllabus and transcript of records must be enclosed to the application.


General competences

During their studies, graduates developed the following competences:

  • ability to understand, in particular, the economic, financial and institutional environment of an organisation, and consequently the ability to analyse that environment,
  • ability to independently use knowledge of economic and financial theory and analysis in practice.
  • ability to analyse the consequences of change in an organisation on its economic environment and consequences of change in the economic environment on an organisation
  • ability to analyse the consequences of structural, regional and international activities on an organisation and also on its wider environment,
  • ability to manage more complex research methods in order to study the effects of economic phenomena,
  • ability to understand the wider, ethical and moral framework of the economic environment and successfully deliver solutions to challenges and/or posed questions through co-operation and group work, which remains within the framework of economic and business ethics,
  • ability to design and critically address bold and innovative ideas from the business field and (co-) operation of organisations in both national and international economic environments,
  • taking responsibility for their own work and/or group work, in which students will co-operate in or lead.

Graduates are qualified to plan and implement strategic and operational plans of companies. Having theoretical and methodological knowledge, they are able of solving the most demanding economic analyses for strategic development of the company. Graduates are capable to identify opportunities and threats of economic, business, institutional and social environment of the company and therefore deploy solutions with the use of professional or scientific methods and approaches along with effective use of modern IT technology. Graduates are likely to find employment in business and other organizations, public sector, and research organizations.

Admission documents

Candidates who hold a Slovenian diploma are requested to submit the following documents to the application:

Diploma: original or copy verified by notary public is accepted – mandatory document.

Transcript of records: original transcript of records of previous studies which includes a GPA – mandatory document.

Proof of English language skills at B2 level or similar (see section Admission) – mandatory document.

 

Candidates who hold a foreign diploma are requested to submit the following documents for the process of recognition of foreign education:

Diploma: original and legalised diploma* – mandatory document.

Transcript of records: original transcript of records of previous studies which includes a GPA – mandatory document.

Certified translation of the diploma: a certified translation of the diploma into Slovene language – mandatory only if the diploma was not issued in Slovenian, English, Italian or Croatian language.

Certified translation of the Transcript: a certified translation of the transcript into Slovene language – mandatory only if the transcript was not issued in Slovenian, English, Italian or Croatian language. 

Chronological description: a short chronological description of the education/previous studies prepared by the candidate – mandatory document.

Description of the study programme: information or description of the previous study programme (eg. brochures, websites) – optional document.

Proof of English language skills at B2 level or similar (see section Admission) – mandatory document.

Enrollment and tuition fees are approved by the Management Board and published in the official price list of the University of Primorska.
